As parents, the happiness of our children is our greatest joy.
A happy child is a treasure for the entire community, but beyond this happiness, we also hope that the children we love will live meaningful lives, that their hearts will be compassionate, that they will contribute to the betterment of the world.
It is from these shared aspirations that this coloring book, Beautiful Words, was created.
Our world is one of great material prosperity; technology, medicine, food, and resources abound, and while these achievements are clear signs of humanity’s progress, they have not produced the happiness and meaning we yearn for.
Another kind of prosperity is needed. We might call this spiritual prosperity.
The word “spiritual” can be widely interpreted, but here it simply means that, beyond our physical senses, human beings also possess inherent spiritual powers, qualities such as courage, humility, kindliness, generosity, sincerity, justice, truthfulness. And just as our physical muscles are strong, these spiritual capacities are also very powerful and have immense influence on ourselves and the world around us.
It is these powers that cause society to truly flourish, and when we prosper both materially and spiritually, our cherished hopes will be realized - a life of meaning, beauty, justice, and true happiness.
Beautiful Words, like its name, uses some very beautiful words to introduce each coloring page. Hover your mouse or tap your mobile in the space below to reveal some of these words!
Each of these words comes from a short quote from the Writings of the Baha'i Faith*. These beautiful words create beautiful thoughts which, in turn, bring beautiful actions into the world.
It is these actions - and not so much religion - that inspired this coloring book because our world is in great need of beautiful actions.
Along with each quotation, a few ideas are included to help contemplate their meaning. Although a few pages mention God, it is not necessary to change your ideas about God or be part of a religion to understand the quotes.
Thinking about God can be complex, so for a moment, let’s consider something we are already familiar with: a tiny seed in the ground.
Everyday, the seed receives sunlight and rain. The seed by itself cannot make light or water; these are powers beyond itself. But as the sun shines and the rain falls, the seed grows into something new - a flower, a tree, a rose. A living thing! Perhaps we can think of “God” in this practical way, a Power greater than ourselves that helps us grow into something more.
*Like all the world’s religions, the Baha'i Faith has sacred Writings that help us understand what it means to be a human being, why we were created, how our hearts and minds work together, and how to live as part of one human family.
